Sorry Claude! I have to tell this story - BEER Atlanta Olympic Games 1996 - Boxing Alumni

Posted by

There was alway a strict no drinking rule on our National Boxing team.  Even though we all were drinking age, our team had a strict no drinking rule for the team whether we were still competing in the competition or not.

It was at the Atlanta Olympics, after our competition had ended, Claude Lambert (54kg Champion), Mike Strange (60kg Champion) and myself (48kg Champion) decided to go out for a nice meal and a few beers.  We picked a location far away from the Olympic Villiage, as well as descrete enough that none of our coaching staff would find us.  It was a great night celebrating our Olympic experiences and having a great night of laughs.  We snuck back into the Olympic Villiage, and into our rooms undetected by the coaching staff.  We got away with it!  We thought .........

After every trip with the Canadian National boxing, we would submit expense claims for any expenses that we incurred and CABA (Canadian Amateur Boxing Association) would reimburse us.  Matt Mizerski, the high performance director for our team took care of looking over all the reciepts that were submitted.  Matt called me a couple weeks after the trip, as I was the Athletes Rep at the time to tell me that Claude was drinking on the trip.  I denied knowing anything of the situation, and asked him how he came up with that accusation, as there were no incidents at all on this trip.  He THEN went on to tell me... "YOU SEE Dom,  he put the reciept for the jugs of beer On his expense Claim, and he said he was with you and Mike"  I BURST Out Laughing ! and so did Matt.  Still laughing hysterically, I told Matt the waitress at the restaurant must have gave him the wrong bill, and that Claude's speaks French so his broken English must have meant COKE (who were the major sponsor of the Games) instead of BEER!

Well Matt, (RIP) didn't buy any of that, but the story was so  good  he didn't discipline us in any way, and we had a good laugh about it for years later and still to this day. CHEERS Matt!!

Years later we are all still in touch with each other and here is a quick video the two did for me, when Mike was in Quebec for his second BoxRun Marathon event.
Claude had Mike and his team over for a BBQ, and Claude
knew how much I wanted to be there there with them so they did this video.

Thanks Boys!!!
